Abstract

Lift-the-flap books comprise a popular sub-genre of children's literature but attract very little critical attention. This article attempts to redress this imbalance by suggesting the following: (1) that lift-theflap books provide useful lessons in reading both literature and pictures for the young reader, (2) that a grammar of lift-the-flap books can be postulated to facilitate their description and discussion, and (3) that the best lift-the-flap books are entertaining postmodern texts, well deserving of critical attention.
