Abstract
This chapter discusses the professionalism behind youth work. Youth work is at the same time very old practice and a very new one. While its beginnings stretch back to the child-saver movements of the last century (Ewen 1983), youth work in Australia has really only moved beyond a volunteer movement with a principal interest in young people’s moral (and sometimes physical) hygiene in the last twenty five years.
