Understanding the disorder of early child development identified in 1943 by Leo Kanner as “autistic disturbances of affective contact” was gained by him with sensitive descriptions of young boys and girls who showed similar problems. They all had difficulty with acting in creative practical ways with toys, and they were unwilling to share feelings and interests with parents. His new understanding required an open mind seeking a clear appreciation of life's inventive vitality. It needed a multidisciplinary developmental approach to clinical interpretation with the same careful sensitivity as Neophytos Papaneophytou invites us to share in his project for Autism 360.
