Abstract

The Exploring Pedagogy in Primary 1 project aims to raise children’s educational attainment across Renfrewshire Council through a targeted professional development programme exploring pedagogical approaches and theories to inform practice. The project was prompted by the recommendations of the Renfrewshire Tackling Poverty Commission and was funded by Renfrewshire Council and the Scottish Government. The project will run for the duration of 18 - months and will involve a total of 30 head teachers and 90 teachers from across 30 schools in Renfrewshire Council. During this time, teachers will participate in an 8 - week PDP designed, delivered and evaluated by the University of Strathclyde. The evaluation strand of the project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the EPP1 programme by examining its impact on teachers' thinking and practice and children's learning experiences. Findings from the project will help identify characteristics of effective programme delivery which lead to positive outcomes for staff, schools and pupils. These will form the basis of our recommendations for future training and initiatives for the improvement of children's educational outcomes. This is one of a series of projects that form part of a 2 - year PDP of tailored interventions to support improved educational outcomes for children in Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) deciles one and two areas across Renfrewshire Council. The project began in January 2017. This is the first formal report of progress and activities.
