Abstract

Angela Brew joins the great debate about the relationship between teaching and research in higher education with the proposal that developing a relationship between the two will enhance both. Her book sets out frameworks and examples for bridging the research-teaching divide, but the key is that knowledge building should be the work of both students and academics. This book carefully explores the negotiations - pedagogical and political - that will be required if we are to achieve this. A strength of the book is that it models the kind of inquiry that Brew advocates, as her argument twists and turns from research-led teaching to teaching-enhanced research to researchenhanced education. Along the way, we are given more than the usual overview of the scholarship of teaching and learning, although there is some of that, and it is useful, thorough and up-to-date. In addition, we are treated to a combination of close examination of issues and an almost 'what if' exploration of possibilities, illustrated by examples from various higher education cultures.
