Abstract

Acids and alkalis provide context for exploring the ways in which chemists think about, describe and use materials. It is a topic that shows the application of chemistry to everyday situations, such as pharmaceutical remedies, such as indigestion remedies, foodstuffs illustrated by baking powder, and agriculture, where the acidity of the soil determines the crops that can be grown. However, the treatment of these varied contexts grows more sophisticated through the different levels of the curriculum.
