This chapter introduces the current codes of practice on special educational needs in the UK, before turning to a description of key areas of need that educational psychologists are likely to encounter. For each area, we will look at the kinds of difficulties that children and young people might have, as well as some of the basic research on the origins of those difficulties. The chapter concludes with an examination of issues relating to the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs, and how interventions can be designed, implemented, and reviewed in order to support pupils with such needs.
