Abstract
This is a brief overview of Hermeneutic Single-Case Efficacy Design (HSCED), developed as a humanistic alternative to randomized clinical trials. I discuss the philosophical and logical basis of HSCED and summarize its methods and in particular the critical framework of alternative explanations used to test client change and psychotherapy efficacy with single cases. This chapter concludes with a summary of developments in HSCED over the past 15 years.
