Beatrice Colin, the author of The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite, writes fiction set in the twentieth century in times of historical turbulence. Here, in three short stories published together for the first time, a suffragette's act of civil disobedience on the night of the census in 1911 has unpredictable consequences, two sisters meet a song collector in the Deep South of America during the Depression, and a couple of volunteers for the International Brigade in Spain in 1937 unwittingly take part in a Christmas story. Each story has a short introduction written by the author.
