Abstract

The European project EXCROSS (Exploiting safety results aCROSS transportation modes) addressed the EC topic related to “Enhance cross-fertilization and synergies in research actions dealing with safety aspects". EXCROSS is a supporting action to enhance cross-fertilization and synergies between research initiatives dealing with safety in the different transport modes reducing the fragmentation that exists in Europe among these initiatives. After a thorough review of more than 300 national and international research projects across the four transport modes (i.e. aviation, road, maritime, railways), the present paper captures the final results of this research initiative, integrating also feedback provided by external experts. The EXCROSS results are grouped according to different topics such as Certification, Dangerous Goods, Fatigue, Training, Incident investigation, Safety Enhancement and Safety assessment. A further major outcome of this research work is related to the initiation of another major research project (SEHORSE) concerning the collaboration between aviation and maritime domain based on resilience engineering principles dealing with human factors issues in an innovative, integrated and multidisciplinary manner.
