Abstract

Highlights the tensions between rights of protection and rights of participation of young people in care, emphasised that young people frequently entered care from situations where they were not protected in the family but where they had ‘adult’ responsibilities such as caring for siblings or parents. In care they were protected, a welcome safe haven from violence, but treated as ‘children’, with little say in decisions or assessment of their competencies.
