Abstract

The workshop will present findings from an empirical study that explored the extent to which a Multiple Choice Exam (MCQ) contributed to a deeper approach to learning when strategies were used to empower year one social work students within the assessment process. Findings from the study highlight that an MCQ exam can be used to create opportunities for a deeper approach to learning; however, it was not apparent for all students. It will be suggested that a shift in power away from the „expert‟ tutor is an essential prerequisite for greater involvement of students within the assessment process. This may be a threatening prospect for some academics and participants will be encouraged to discuss the appropriateness of the findings for their own discipline, especially in terms existing assessment practices
