Abstract

This session examines two Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) initiatives developed in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. WIL assists students to bridge the gap between theory and work and involves authentic work-focused experiences, structured through a tripartite relationship-universities, students, and employers. Dr Mike Murray will provide a synopsis of (1) Industry Mentoring of undergraduates by Alumni engineers, and (2) Civil Engineering 4 (CE4R) Real, a co-curricular programme of workshops. Both initiatives have proven success in developing students’ employability skills and professional identity. Sophie Gwynne (Alumni, 2021) an Assistant Engineer (Highways) with Arcadis will present on her attendance at CE4R during her studies and how this influenced her success in securing a summer placement and graduate job with Arcadis. Elizabeth Aspinall (Alumni, 2022) a Civil Engineer with Civic Engineers will present on how her Industrial Mentoring experience during her third-year studies led to a summer placement and graduate job with Civic Engineers.
