Abstract

The paper explores the factors of importance in mode of transport choice specific to overseas visitors in urban tourism destinations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on 8 overseas visitors to the UK and 7 UK residents who had recently returned from business trip. The responses were coded into 26 categories. The highest ranked variable was personal safety on public transport, followed by information, and access to attractions at the destination. Overseas visitors rated helpful personnel and effective customer service above cost, speed and punctuality. It is concluded that the conceptual model is a valid starting point for the examination of visitors' travel behaviour at urban destinations.
