Abstract

According to Bioy Casares, the fantastic in literature responds to our desire for imaginative ways to explain the world when we suspect all elucidation is partial and relative. He regards the fantastic as a means of questioning how we order reality; such questions lead to cracks in this order which allow us to perceive a different kind of coherence, or simply confront us with the abyss of the incomprehensible. This article examines several of Bioy Casares' fantastic short stories from different periods of his production to establish whether they reveal an evolving take on the tenets of this narrative mode or, as Beatriz Curia asserts, are a single tale told in a variety of ways which emphasize the multiplicity of perspectives from which we may rethink our relationship with reality.
