Abstract

The impact of household and family on entrepreneurial behaviours and practices is not well understood. We address this research gap by drawing on Bourdieu's (1977; 1984; 1986) theory of practice to explore the perspectives of eight women entrepreneurs utilise the economic, cultural, social and symbolic capital of household and family to engage in entrepreneurship. We show that emotioanl support is especially important for women entrepreneurs and develop Bourdieu's conceptual framework accordingly. Furthermore, we demonstrate that household members not only facilitate and impede entrepreneurial processes, but also help shape them over time.
