Abstract

Age—length-key and length-frequency analysis are well-known methods for estimating the proportion of fish at each age in a sample and the associated mean length and standard deviation of length at age. In this paper a combined age—length analysis (CALA) is described which fits a statistical model to both the age and length data. Monte Carlo testing of the methods indicates that the CALA method provides more precise estimates of the parameters than conventional age-length-key methods.
