Abstract

Hamilton, John, second Lord Belhaven and Stenton (1656–1708), politician, was born in Edinburgh on 5 July 1656, the eldest son of Robert Hamilton, Lord Presmennan (d. 1695), one of the judges of the court of session, and Marion, eldest daughter of John Denholm of Muirhouse. Known as John Hamilton of Biel, in 1674 he married Margaret (d. 1717), daughter of Sir Robert Hamilton of Selverton Hill and granddaughter of John Hamilton, first Lord Belhaven and Stenton; they had two sons. In 1675 Belhaven secured a settlement of his title on his granddaughter's husband, and following the former's death, four years later, Hamilton of Biel became second Lord Belhaven and Stenton.
