This book is a product of the 'Economics of Aging' research programme at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a collection of papers presented at a conference in 2001, and is the ninth volume in a series dedicated to this topic. The focus of most of the chapters is on the experience of the USA (as seems to be the norm with NBER publications of this type). There are 11 chapters in total*/all written by recognized experts in the field. Each chapter is followed by a 'Comment' (also written by a recognized expert) aimed at pointing out both the weaknesses and strengths of the contribution and indicating directions for future research
