In considering a strategy for research development at the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics, the importance of making accessibility and involvement in sport to those athletically inclined has become apparent. Preparation for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow highlights a need to champion sport for people with lower limb deficiency and empower those who might never have participated to become involved1. This has underpinned a unique and exciting opportunity to form a national SPEEAD network with a focus on building professional expertise, increasing research capacity and facilitating knowledge transfer in sporting prosthetics. Sarah and Sandra will discuss the background to the project, the aims, objectives and key activities of SPEEAD and the work to date. Forthcoming user-focused sporting events and the growth potential of SPEEAD will also be presented in this extended free-paper session.
