The change from manufacturing of normal scale components to manufacturing of micro components is not a matter of just scaling down the well known existing operations and using traditional materials. For metal micro components, in the sub-millimetre range, the volume of material becomes so small that it consists of only few grains. The departure from the polycrystalline nature of the material causes problems regarding the process scatter and product quality. To resolve these problems ultrafine grained (UFG) metals, produced by severe (SPD), can be used.
