The application of control loop performance assessment and benchmarking techniques to industrial process control loops is considered. A normalised performance index Ψ(HP) that compares the performance of feedback control schemes against a generalised predictive control framework for MIMO systems is introduced. In the process industries, Generalised Predictive Control (GPC) algorithms have become increasingly popular and are being used both at the supervisory level and the regulatory level. The theoretical problem considered is how to obtain a measure that would allow us to judge the performance of predictive controllers, as well as compare the performance of non predictive controllers, against the generalised predictive control standard.
