The idiosyncratic characteristics which separate Spanish thought and culture from those of the rest of Europe constitute one of the key issues discussed in María Zambrano's Pensamiento y poesía en la vida española. This article argues that one of the pivotal points in which Zambrano's sense of Spanish exceptionalism is based on is religion. Consequently, the aim of this paper is, first, to clarify what the meaning of the concept of religion is in reference to Zambrano's thought, particularly paying attention to the relationship between religion and spirituality. Then, it will explore the attitudes towards religion during the Spanish Second Republic and, based on this, it will finally re-evaluate Zambrano's position regarding Spanish exceptionalism.
