Biography of Lindsay, John, seventeenth earl of Crawford and first earl of Lindsay [known as earl of Crawford-Lindsay] (1596–1678), politician, was the son of Robert, ninth Lord Lindsay of the Byres (d. 1616), and Lady Christian Hamilton (d. 1646), eldest daughter of Thomas, first earl of Haddington. He is said to have received ‘a noble education both at home and in foreign parts’ (Lindsay).
