Abstract

Reflecting on the experiences, achievements and challenges experienced by the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice, this chapter seeks to highlight key features of the centre’s novel approach to improving care and support to children and young people in conflict with the law. After outlining the functions of the centre, the authors highlight examples of policy and practice changing as a consequence of their work, noting the importance of access to decision makers, relationships with stakeholders, competency of the staff and the amplification of the voice of lived experience. The chapter concludes by considering whether such an approach is replicable elsewhere, and what organisational and systemic conditions would be necessary in order to do so.
