Abstract

Partial Discharge (PD) is one of the main failure contributors in medium voltage (MV) switchgears. Apart from the conventional approach of the PD activity detection techniques, there are also non-intrusive methods among which is the application of the radio frequency interference (RFI) sensors. Efforts are still undertaken to estimate the best positions of these sensors for PD observation. To assist in optimizing the sensor placement, a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) bus bar chamber model is created in Comsol Multiphysics and electromagnetic wave propagation is studied generated by PD within the chamber. The simulation provides an improvement understanding for the radiated frequency (RF) propagation signals, thus understanding better the complex propagation paths to enable future sensor optimization positions.
