Abstract
This chapter forms part of a publication, edited by Brigid Daniels, to relect on fifty years of the 1968 Social Work Scotland Act. The theme of the chapter is personalisation and the connexions that can be made between this policy and sentiments behind the 1968 Act. The chapter concludes that there are connecting themes - particularly around the role to be played by 'community' - but that changing social circumstances, organizational aspects of social work delivery and a philosophical understanding around the role of community itself mean that the links are tenuous without rethinking social work's current role.
