Paper focusing on the requirements of HFC refrigerants in a competitive environment. The best method of assessing trial refrigerants with a view to producing a ranking order, best to worst, is based on the measurement of refrigerating capacity in a properly designed calorimeter (3). A COP calculation derived from compressor shaft power is also available and gives the same ranking. Since efficiency is a function of both plant and refrigerant, the possibility exists that the same tests carried out in different equipment could produce a different ranking. The method described here gives a good general guide. The choice of blends for niche applications must be made with an appropriate level of sophistication in the overall design of the plant if a definite reduction is to be achieved in the total global warming effect.
