Abstract

There is still little indication of a recovery in the flagging fortunes of the Scottish economy. Stagnant output and falling investment give little hope of a recovery of activity and a reduction in unemployment during the remainder of 1978. The Budget, which contained no special measures for the assisted areas, can hardly be expected to provide a strong stimulus to the Scottish economy. Thus, we expect that, after rising to around 210,000 in July, unemployment in Scotland will level off at about 200,000 in October.
