Abstract

Recognizing that the Folio edition of Dora Bruder (1999) is not merely a reproduction of the 1997 Gallimard Blanche original, but a revised and augmented version of its predecessor, this article begins by examining the two texts in tandem and detailing the amendments that Modiano has made in moving from one to the other. The implications of these changes are then assessed, with the author's apparent wish to make his narrative more complete and more truthful, prompting a discussion of the overall status of the book - is it a work of fact, a fiction or a 'faction'? Finally, the unacknowledged contribution of Serge Klarsfeld is elucidated, a con tribution which emerges as so vital that it provides the key to the Dora Bruder project in its entirety.
