Abstract

A 3-stage, 8-bit optical packet compressor which compresses 100 Mb/s packets to a 100 Gb/s using 2×2 LiNbO3 crossbar switches, polarization maintaining fiber and polarization maintaining couplers is constructed. The timing of the bits at each stage is appropriately delayed to travel first in pairs, then in quadruplets, and finally as a compressed eight-bit 100 Gb/s packet. A periodically driven piezo rod on one of the gradient refractive index lenses on the translation stage assures a rapid interference signal at all times which proves that optical packet compressors are necessary for ultrafast packet-switched all-optical time division multiplexed networks.
