Future cities are likely to be characterised by deployment of new and renewable energy systems. Maximum impact will be achieved where local schemes are designed to reduce the load being imposed on the public supply networks for electricity (and, in some cases, heat) or, conversely, be configured as dispatchable generation to facilitate active control at the request of network operators. This paper elaborates a modelling method whereby the match between demand at any urban scale and a hypothesised supply, comprising a mix of technologies for heat and electricity generation – so-called polygeneration – may be assessed, including the impact of demand management to improve the match.
