By the time this article is published the newly established Human Rights Council (HRC) of the United Nations will have entered its first session. It replaces the erstwhile UN Human Rights Commission (the Commission). The major criticism against the now laid to rest Commission is its membership. The Commission had members who were reportedly from some of the worst rights-violating countries. This, as the argument goes, compromised the Commission’s decisions.
