Insulin resistance is linked to altered fat metabolism and elevated expression of inflammatory cytokines, particularly from fat tissue. This is turn is associated with obesity. It is proposed that NOD-like receptor expression may be responsible for inducing cytokine production from innate immune cells such as macrophages in fat tissue which in turn are linked to insulin resistance and obesity.
