Abstract

Evaluates the Government's rationale for not including carer status as one of the specific grounds for protection against discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, that: (1) the protected characteristics under the Act are intended to apply to a person's inherent status or identity, not to what one does; and (2) sufficient protection is afforded to carers from the addition of a right to claim associative discrimination along with the pre-existing employment rights. Analyses the nature of care and its place in a market economy.
