Abstract

A system is proposed using FPGA technology to perform hardware-based film- restoration. Soft Morphological filters are a brand of non-linear image processing. These filters produce excellent results in film sequence restoration, removing scratches and blotches. However, they are very difficult to design. The University of Strathclyde has pioneered an innovative technique for the design of filters to restore archive film footage. The technique produced excellent results but has proved to be extremely slow when performed in software, taking many hours. This paper represents an evolution to a practical system by moving to directhardware processing. The practicality of a restoration system is also considered, taking account of the requirement to deal with shot changes, skipped frames etc
