Finding suitable and effective protection strategies for incorporation into full electric propulsion systems continues to be the focus of significant research effort. An emerging tool for assessing the effectiveness of new protection strategies is hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation. This allows the capability to test emerging novel protection equipment under a variety of controlled conditions. This paper examines the real-time interaction of hardware protection relays and a simulated marine power network, and describes an approach for successfully running a marine electrical network in real-time. The model development and testing process is presented and includes results demonstrating the operation of the power system and the associated protection system under appropriate operational conditions.
