Abstract

In this paper the necessity for a simulation platform capable of modelling existing and novel wholesale electricity market architectures, such that their ability to accommodate significant volumes of distributed generation may be investigated, is explained. Research that has used agent-based simulation to investigate features of electricity markets in the past is reviewed and the outcomes of the work described. Extensions and additions to the capabilities of the simulators used in previous research, required for application specifically to highly distributed power systems, are identified along with the issues perceived likely to prove most challenging. Details of the unique approach being taken in the development of a simulator are given and the aims of some initial experimentation specified.
