The pathways that nature employs to produce elegant and species specific biosilica structures are slowly being discovered. As our knowledge of such systems grows, it is increasingly clear that various biomacromolecules are playing key roles in biosilicification. Experimental scientists are now being inspired to use the information about natural pathways in order to develop new synthetic methodologies for preparing silica (and other minerals) in vitro that utilize functional macromolecules and biomacromolecules. The new bioinspired materials will be described and the role(s) of (bio)macromolecules will be discussed.
