Over the past decade it has been demonstrated that biominerals can be selectively dissolved in order to reveal the ‘organic matrix' that is a key component of the inherent inorganic-organic hybrid biomineral structure. Characterization of the ‘organic matrix' has revealed functional biomolecules that play an important role in biomineralisation. Information about such biomolecules is now the basis of bioinspired routes to new materials and novel synthetic mineral structures. Of particular importance is the fact that these bioinspired synthetic pathways are achieved under mild conditions in vitro.
