Abstract

Perfect discrimination between non-orthogonal states is forbidden by the laws of quantum mechanics. Several strategies to discriminate optimally between states of an arbitrary set exist, and many of these have been implemented in experiments using optical polarisation. In this paper we discuss maximum confidence measurements and their recent optical implementation.
