Abstract
In this paper, the introduction of the thermal induced residual stresses into a single fibre composite was investigated by phase-stepping photoelasticity. It has been demonstrated that stress transfer occurs through a thermally induced interfacial shear stress. On the axial loading of the composite, the stress at which the birefringence is extinguished can be used to estimate the magnitude of the interfacial shear stress.
