As a result of increased human activity, discharge of nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorous, into receiving waters represents one of the most serious environmental problems. As strict regulations have been imposed on the total nitrogen level at the effluent of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) the need for enhanced operational strategies arises.
