Abstract

As case studies of a number of large organizations show, visionary leadership is a critical success factor in the successful deployment of Six Sigma. It has been suggested that Six Sigma initiatives be launched by executive managers who are able to set a clear vision of the new culture for employees at different levels and empower them by giving them a sense of accountability and ownership. These key leadership factors are applicable in any situation, but necessary requirements for Six Sigma Master Black Belts (MBB) and Black Belts (BB). Results of a focus group study of the roles of MMBs and BBs at five organizations examine the theory of leadership and leadership styles they use. Traits MMBs and BBs need to be successful leaders are discussed, as are selection criteria and necessary skills.
