Abstract

We report a long-range optical methane sensor to enable remote detection of gas leaks from pipelines and other infra-structure. The system, based on back-scatter from a target surface (e.g. the ground around a pipeline), tuneable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) and a high power fibre Raman amplifier, can detect a 1 m cloud of methane with a concentration of 100ppm at a distance of 200m.
