Abstract
This paper investigates the potential for water filled mineshafts or similar structures to provide flexibility and improve financial performance. Future electricity tariffs with import and export pricing based on grid wind generation surplus and shortfall periods and future costs for other low carbon combined heat and power (CHP) plants fuels (e.g. hydrogen) are considered. Temperature profiles of geology surrounding the MSTES were also modelled. A techno-economic model and case study are described and performance with and without MSTES evaluated. In heat pump (HP) and CHP based systems, MSTES showed flexibility and levelised cost of heat (LCOH) advantages through preferential operation in wind surplus periods. CHP financial performance shows high dependence on operating mode (power or heat following) and fuel cost. With MSTES, the HP and CHP based systems can support the renewable grid by offering up to 100% flexibility and reduce the LCOH up to 45 and 13 p/kWh, respectively.
