Abstract

This presentation speaks to the beginnings of a research journey exploring the contextual challenges to engaging rural communities in social and environmental innovation projects in Sicily, Italy. Prior to formally starting his PhD, the researcher conducted a preliminary participant-observation study rooted in grounded theory. This study entailed the researcher's immersion in a rural Sicilian setting alongside community organisers and activists. While emplaced, the researcher took part in daily activities of various community projects whilst eliciting preliminary insights. Most notably, the researcher concluded his emplacement by presenting on the topic of community engagement theory at a rural festival so as to spark conversation and elicit subsequent insights into the challenged and opportunities faced by change agents. This presentation shares the preliminary insights from unstructured interviews, semi-structured interviews and forms of auto-ethnography conducted during this investigation.
