In this conceptual paper, we review the development of case study research, from its early beginnings of "orthodox case studies" within the positivist paradigm to the most recent interpretivist views of "emergent case studies" involving serialization. To make the next step in developing the field, we apply the concept of bracketing, one of the four fundamental concepts of phenomenology, in the deserialization of events. We believe that practising bracketing through personal and transpersonal reflexivity can help make case study research more transparent without compromising the values of flexibility and indirection introduced by serialization.
