Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) combined aerodynamics, hydrodynamics and mooring line forces influence the aerodynamic performance of the rotor and the airfoil sections along the blade. Therefore, the aerodynamic environment of FOWT is considerably more complex than onshore wind turbines. This paper presents the aerodynamic characteristics acting on the NREL 5MW offshore wind turbine blade under different environmental conditions based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and unsteady Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method. Platform motions result in transient flow conditions, so an analysis has been carried out on the motions of a FOWT and the CFD method captures the physics of the flow field.
