Abstract
The paper examines the strategies pursued by market wholesalers in the face of major changes in external operating conditions. It concludes that more recent theoretical approaches to strategic analysis which emphasise capabilities and resource base provide better explanations of observed behaviour than approaches which define typologies of generic strategies.
